Maria S. Floro is an emeritus professor of economics at American University in Washington, D.C. While at American University, she served as co-director of the graduate Program on Gender Analysis in Economics (PGAE) from 2009 to 2021. She led the Care Work and the Economy project from 2017-2021.
Her books include “Informal Credit Markets and the New Institutional Economics,” “Women’s Work in the World Economy,” and “Gender, Development, and Globalization: Economics as if All People Mattered” (co-authored). She has also authored numerous monographs and journal articles on gender, vulnerability, informal employment, food security, care work, demographic change and care dependency ratio, care work, time use and well-being, and climate change.
She received her doctorate in food research from Stanford University.
